21 Dec Kurtis Blow and the Hip Hop Nutcracker Blew the Roof off Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre Tuesday Night
Last night Wichita welcomed the Hip Hop Nutcracker to town. Forget the tutus and toe shoes; this re-imagined Nutcracker had track suits and tennis shoes. The musical experience is based on “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky. The Nutcracker was originally performed in Moscow in 1892; the Hip Hop version was born 122 years later in New Jersey.
The impressive line-up of talent included 80’s rap icon Kurtis Blow. Blow, the first rapper in history to get a record deal served as MC and hype-man introducing the musical and closing out the performance. The dancer’s resumes are equally impressive with many having performed with today’s top hip hop artists including Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, and Christina Aguilera.
Many dancers have also appeared on the big and small screens. More than one was on the popular dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance,” another was in the “Step Up” movie franchise, and the violinist received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the famed Juilliard school of performing arts.
Needless to say, the crowd was absolutely blown away with the talent, music, energy, and artistic expression of last night’s show. Audience members gave a standing ovation and asked the Orpheum staff to bring the show back next year. Mostly everyone could think of an additional friend or two who would’ve loved the performance.
