The Friends University Jazz Department will present “The Universal Language of Jazz”, Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Sebits Auditorium.

New Director of Jazz Studies, Dr. Robert Brooks, will be continuing the tradition of great jazz at Friends with a concert celebrating jazz compositions inspired by different places and cultures.

“Please join us for a night of inspiring jazz from around the world; music that that ties us all together no matter where you are from,” said Dr. Robert Brooks.

The Friends University Jazz Ensemble I will be joined by guest artist Dr. Todd Kelly on trumpet.

Dr. Kelly is Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Besides directing a plethora of bands and teaching a variety of jazz classes, Dr. Kelly also maintains a busy performing schedule. He has performed with Wayne Newton, Jerry Lewis, Charo, the Fifth Dimension, Lesley Gore, Mannheim Steamroller, Maria Schneider, and the national touring companies of Hairspray, Wicked, Mary Poppins, Chicago, White Christmas, Kinky Boots, La La Land and more. Dr. Kelly has been published in Band World, Downbeat, JAZZed, and The Instrumentalist and even has his own book, “Chet Baker: 21 Selected Solos”.

Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $9 for students and seniors. The performance will take place in Sebits Auditorium in Riney Fine Arts Center on the Friends University campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kan.
