We received good news last week! The BNSF Railway and Amtrak will operate a special inspection trip between Oklahoma City and Kansas City through Wichita.
JOIN US AT NOON ON FRIDAY, JUNE 9, AT UNION STATION, 701 E. Douglas, as we celebrate the arrival of this special Amtrak train!
This is the next step in restoring passenger rail service between Oklahoma City and Kansas City, a project we have been working on for the past sixteen years. Such a restoration would restore another portion of the Lone Star route lost in 1979 due to Amtrak budget cuts.
There are still many hurdles, the largest of which is financial; however, we have hopes this trip will improve relationships between BNSF, Amtrak, and state officials. Last spring we were told by Amtrak officials the Heartland Flyer must grow to survive. ODOT and TxDOT continue to pressure Amtrak to provide more bang for state investment.
